Reflexology

Reflexology is a popular and relaxing holistic treatment. It is based on the principle that reflex points on the soles, sides and tops of the feet are connected energetically to corresponding organs and areas throughout the body. In this way, the feet can be seen as a “map” of the body.

The practice of Reflexology is not new. It is evident throughout history appearing in different ages and different cultures worldwide. The Chinese are thought to have used an early form of reflexology over 5000 years ago in their use of pressure therapies.

However, the oldest documentation and earliest records have been found in picture form on the walls of the tombs in Egypt. The picture opposite depicts an Egyptian reflexology treatment said to be from the early 6th Dynasty dating to approximately 2330 B.C. It is a wall painting from the tomb of Ankhmahor (Highest official after the King) at Saqqara and is known as the Physician's tomb. The translation reads as “Don't hurt me” with the practitioner's reply being “I shall act so you praise me”. This is an indication that the benefits of working on feet to encourage general good health have been acknowledged for some considerable time! Egyptian reflexology
These ancient forms of foot massage were based on the principle that energy zones run throughout the body.

In the early 20th century Dr William Fitzgerald claimed to have discovered zone therapy, he found that he could ease underlying problems by applying pressure in various places along 10 vertical zones the length of the body. But it was Eunice Ingham who developed this much further, becoming known as the 'mother of modern reflexology', by mapping the entire body onto the feet and developing reflex points. (The diagram opposite is not accurate and merely serves to illustrate this principle). reflex points
Modern reflexology is a non-invasive therapy performed on the feet using manipulation and pressure to varying degrees to activate the natural healing powers of the body. Reflexologists work on the reflex points with their thumbs and fingers using specialised massage techniques. This stimulates reflex points in the feet, which are linked by energy pathways to corresponding parts of the body, bringing the body back into balance and health.

A reflexology treatment lasts for approximately one hour. As it is just the feet that are being worked on, you remain fully clothed; simply removing shoes and socks.

You will be invited to relax on our therapy couch. Your feet will be cleansed at the start of the treatment and each foot will be warmed and gently stretched. Then a variety of reflexology techniques will be used and adapted to suit your individual needs.

A reflexology treatment will relax every aspect of the body and is beneficial in easing both chronic and acute conditions by establishing the parts of the body that are out of balance and thus working inefficiently.
